Metadata – it is the lifeblood of your DAM. Taxonomy is critical, UI is a big deal, good processes are important, but without the right metadata, it’s just a big mass of pictures. Who, what, when, where, why, and how are good places to start – the basic building blocks for identifying images in ways that can assist in finding them later.
Here are assembled a series of articles and podcasts to help wrap your head around the topic of metadata, its definition, uses, types, and the amount of thought and work that should go into it before you leap into your DAM…
“…metadata is an asset unto itself — and an important one, at that. It provides the foundation and structure needed to make your assets more discoverable, accessible and, therefore, more valuable. In other words, metadata turns assets into smart assets. Simply digitizing video, audio, graphic files and more only scratches the surface of their value as digital assets. Their full potential is realized only by their use, and they can only be used if they can be found. The robustness and relevance of the metadata associated with an asset is what makes it findable, and therefore usable.” – John Horodyski, Metadata Makes the DAM
Another DAM Podcast has a good category of stories concerning metadata.
John Horodyski has written a series of good articles on the topic:
